In 1918 funds were raised by Gunnison County, and in 1919 Gunnison High School was built south of the existing Normal School building. A "basement" connecting the two buildings was soon built, but a completed "Central Hall" would not become a reality until 1930. The wire fence was an attempt to keep open range cattle off campus grounds. (Note the grazing bovines on the left in the photo.)

View of North Hall, Gunnison County High School (later South Hall) and the first floor of Central Hall from the west, circa 1923. Central Hall began as a basement linking the two buildings; in 1923 the tar paper roof over the section "had become badly torn, and the college did not have funds [$1,000] for the repair..." --Abbott Fay, "Mountain Academia".
