81. Wolcott

The Wolcott bridge over the Eagle River is visible at midfield. It was a Luten arch bridge, constructed in 1916, and has since been replaced.
Lena Yost's father, Frank Sansosti, was the D&RG section foreman at Wolcott for many years. The railroad depot and section house are next to the tracks in this photo. The Sansosti family lived at Wolcott for 27 years.

This Mallet locomotive is at Minturn. Anatole Mallet, a Swiss engineer, patented the compound engine which was housed under one locomotive frame having six or more sets of axles. The rear set of driving wheels were fixed in the main frame of the locomotive. The extra pull generated made the locomotive useful in mountainous regions but slower on flat terrain.

Two of the tent buildings on First Street across from the railroad station in Gypsum [circa 1900]. The first buildings providing services to railroad employees had wooden platforms with tent structures on top and sometimes a false front.
